Poster Final

Here is the final draft of my poster, I have moved the pictures at the bottom around to fit with the conventions of band posters.

Digipak Final

Here is the final version of my digipak, I changed the placing of all of the pictures. I added two discs instead of having a lyric book,  I also changed the font until I found one I felt comfortable with. I moved the logo to my front cover and found a good puddle shot to use as the back cover to put the text of. I also added effects to my discs by picking a random texture of the internet, I then messed around with the filter effects to change the colour of it so that it fit in with the rest of my digipak and genre. I reversed what I did to my main disc to the bonus one, so that they didn't look the same but still fit in with the genre. I used two different placed pictures of the band but edited them so that they both look dark and fit in. I also reused the puddle picture to put behind the discs instead of having it plain.

Poster attempt 2

Here is my Poster attempt 2, I have changed the colours of the stars and shrunk the size of the bottom images, I have also moved the date so it's more centered, all after the feedback I was given.

First Music Video Draft

Here is the first draft of our music video which is actually just the first take that we did, there isn't any editing done to it. The video is just a shot of us playing the music, later on we will edit this into our video, we just have to get the narrative shots and put them into the video. We also assume that later on we will have to film the band shots again to get it from different angles.

Poster Attempt 1

Here is the first version of my poster, I added the front cover of my digipak in the left hand corner so you can know what the poster is linked to. I also added social media and the iTunes logo at the bottom to show where you can get the song and find more information about the band. I added the date of which the album is released at the bottom middle. I added the logo of Warner Brothers at the bottom right of the logo. I also added ratings to the poster to show people what to expect and to make it look more like a realistic poster. I kept the font from the digipak and used it in the poster for both the band name and album name.

Digipak Presentation Feedback

This is the feedback from my first digipak draft. There are a lot of good points and points that say what my work can be improved on. Some feedback is saying that the pictures were too dark but that was just because of the screen it was being presented on. I will still however decide to change the brightness of my digipak in case it wasn't the screen and it could happen again. Another point that I was given was telling me that I needed to switch around the front cover and the left cover since the left cover looked more professional and what a front cover should look like. I will go on and change the digipak layout around so it makes more sense and can please the audience's feedback. My track listing needs to be developed I will change it so it looks more like a real track list on a digipak. Instead of lyrics on my inside cover it needs to be a lyrics book, which I might remove and add a second disc instead so that it can fulfill my promise of a bonus disc. I also got feedback on my disc saying it needs to be edited, which I will get around to making it link with the rest of my digipak. I will take all of this feedback into consideration and make my second draft a lot better than the first one, so that it can please the audience.

Digipak First Draft

This is my first draft of the digipak. I have decided to create a dark theme by keeping all of the colours throughout the pictures in the digipak dark. The front cover I have chosen is a puddle which I used to relate to my digipak design. I'm not too sure if I'll keep it because it doesn't really capture the image that I wanted to see. The back cover I feel okay with, I like how I have laid everything out with the picture of the band in the background. My left cover is the logo, however since I wanted everything to stay with a dark theme I decided that I would invert the whole image, making it black with white text. Then for the rest of the text used in the digipak I decided to make them all white so that it would link. My cover inside I think is fine with the lyrics going down it. The only part I disagree with at the moment is the disc. I am still trying to find a way to make it look similar to the one I did for my digipak design. My left cover is looking a bit plain, so I might also do something to that as well.

Digipak Draft Creation

This is the digipak creation stage, here you can see all parts of the digipak form when I started creating it. The images are laid out in a weird order but it starts from the second to right at the top going right. You can see the stages from where I began putting in images from our test shots along with some text which is usually seen in most normal digipaks.

Studio Shots

Here are some more photo-shoots that we had done. This time it was done in a studio in the school, this is to show more of the locations that we are going to be using for our music video. It also shows the band actually using instruments which is usually a main part in rock genre music videos. We also began shooting in the studio, however we are not sure whether we like the videos or not so we are going to film again but this time in a drama room as it means that we can have more room to film, since that was a big issue using the studio. It also means that we can set up a stage and try and capture everything how we imagined.

Music Video Ptich

Pitch Feedback

Here is what everyone said about our pitch. Overall I think that our pitch went really well, there were some parts that could be improved on, however most of the feedback agrees that all of the work that we had created over the last month has turned out really good. We will be presenting the pitch again so we will have to use what we was given in here and put it into our actual presentation. Some good feedback was that we had good analysis of the original video and our test shots were looking good. Our logo was praised a lot in the feedback along with the band name and song choice. Some parts that people found confusing was narrative, this might of been because of the animatic. Even though the animatic links well with beat of the song, trying to follow the story is proven quite hard when you watch it. We also forgot to add a Goodwin's analysis of our own music video, so this is another thing that we will do next time.

Group Pitch

Here is our presentation for our music video pitch. Here we have all the work that we had been working on for the last month into one presentation. We decided to showoff the song choice that we made and we put an detailed analysis about it. We put in the audience profiling that we had created along with our mood board since they linked together. We also put the story-boarding and animatic that we created since both of them also link together. The location and photo-shoot shots and the final logo idea were again also in our presentation, this is to show off the rest how far we have come so far. It also allows them to tell us what we need to add and what could be improved.

Animatic

This is the animatic for our music video. We took pictures of all of our storyboards and then individually print screened each section that we needed; after we had done that we took the song choice of 'The Pretender' and edited it together with the pictures using final cut pro. This is our first attempt of making an animatic, we all felt that it worked well with timing the music to each shot, however some parts can be confusing if you don't know the context.

Storyboards

These are our storyboards. After analysing all of the lyrics we then decided to put it into our storyboard. We all chose the best ideas from our lyric analysis and thought about how that could be implemented into our storyboard. The next stage that we are going to take is animating the storyboard and turning it into and animatic by linking it with our song choice.

Final Logo

This is the Logo that we all decided on, combining a font that found and likes with the statue of liberty since it links to our name. We also made the flame light blue to represent ice, which again represents the cold part of our name. We wanted to try and link to logo to name as much as possible so that when people see the logo it will make them instantly know who the band is.

Sunday 16 November 2014

Band Logo

These are the three Logo choices that we came up with. They all have the same image in the background however, the font's are different in each one and they are also in different locations around the picture.

The Logo we decided to go for was the middle one, we felt it looked the best out of the rest and the font also fits well with the image in the background of the statue of liberty.

Font survey

We took another survey to get peoples on opinion on the font that we should use. The font is important as it will be shown in our digipak's, posters and logo. Even though we have a lot of votes on a certain one, we are still not sure if we like it ourselves so we are looking into this more and trying to research more fonts that could look go for our band.

Thanks For The Memories Analysis

At the start of the music video there is a long shot of two bang members talking to each other. It then cuts to a long shot of the whole band assuming position. The lead singer Patrick Stump is interrupted by a Chimpanzee which then shows a medium shots of each member of the band looking annoyed. The video becomes a bit confusing at this part and gives the audience the feeling that the Chimpanzee's are in charge since they are controlling the camera and sitting in the director and producer chairs. When the music video actually starts the the first shot that is shown is another medium shot of the Patrick Stump. The next shot after that is two chimps controlling a camera.

Throughout the whole the music the it switches between shots of chimpanzee's taking over the set and using the camera's and dressing room, to shots of the band performing on set watching this all happen. Some match in the lyrics and visuals is there is a Chimp playing a violin followed with the lyrics "who does he think he is', this could be saying that the Chimpanzee is imitating the bands music. When the beat in the music comes in, the camera switches back to another long shot of the band performing again. It then cuts to another shot of the Chimpanzee's controlling the cameras which then cuts back to Patrick in the spotlight, this could be showing him as the star image. Throughout the music video most of the lighting is very dark and you can notice that the room is foggy when the lights are on.

The next important shot is a of the guitarist spinning out of control which cuts to the Chimpanzee looking distressed which cuts back to the the guitarist looking confused as if he did something wrong. The Chimp then takes this Guitar and shows him what to do. This is mocking a director since they would usually complain about whats wrong with a video and try to do it themselves. The next array of shots are of what looks like the band taking a break from the music video, this is shown by the band members getting some food and playing chess with the Chimps. This makes it looks like the chimps are imitating humans. The way Patrick and the orangutan are playing chess could show that humans and the chimps are in competition.

The next significant shots show the humans getting into fights with the chimps and it looks as if they are getting replaced by the chimps or that they are trying to show them how to play, which is acting like human directors. After this a close-up of a band member getting his make-up done by some chimps, this connotes that he is ready to start performing. It then cuts to an establishing shot of the band performing on set. The next scene is another part that matched the lyrics and visuals. When a member of the band is waiting in a hotel room a woman walks in and the lyrics say "They say I only think in the form of crunching numbers, in hotel rooms collecting page six lovers". The mise en scene also fits with the scene for this part of the song because of the a dress a woman is wearing and the fact the room is the colour red gives of a promiscuous atmosphere. This is an example of voyeurism which is a part of Goodwin's theory. The next main scene is the Chimpanzee replacing the band member who is sitting with the girl, however the girl doesn't act like she notices and they continue what they were doing. This could connote that the Chimpanzee's are again replacing the band or seen as humans. It then cuts back to a long shot of the band playing again on set with their instruments.

At the conclusion of the video, you see the band all playing together whilst the Chimpanzee and the girl are sitting in the directors chairs watching the video. Everything seems to be going fine until the Chimpanzee begins playing with the girls hair, this then shows the guitarist get annoyed and show he is fed up with these Chimpanzee's taking over. He shows this by smashing everything around and throwing his guitar. The video closes with him destroying the B on the sign in the background.

Mood Board

This is the mood board that represents our audience profile. On here we have all sorts of things that relate to the band and what the band like. For example we have and American flag on the mood board since we are meant to be a patriotic American band. We also have pictures of bands that we said we were influenced by to show what we wish to end up like. We have clothing as well to show the attire that we would wear.

Location Shots

These are some of the location shots that we took on our photo-shoot. These also show a variety of areas that range from inside to outside. Some of these photographs can be very useful again for when I am making my digipak and poster because of the professional look that they have.

Photoshoot

These are our pictures from our first photo-shoot that we had done. We decided to take a bit of variety, this can be seen by us having outside shots and inside ones. I personally prefer the inside shots that we had taken, I felt that they looked very professional and will come in handy for my digipak and poster and also for showing when present our pitch.

Lyrics Analysis

This is the analysis of the lyrics for our song choice of 'The Pretender'. We started from the top and began pitching in idea on what we thought we could do for the certain section of the song. We separated our ideas by putting one persons on the left and the others on the right. This should hopefully help us when creating our storyboard for our music video.

Song Choice - The Pretender Analysis

In the end 'The Pretender' got the majority vote for the song choice of our music video. We took it into consideration and all decided to agree that 'The Pretender' is a good choice for our music video.

The song choice that we have chosen is The Pretender. It is is a song by the American alternative rock band Foo Fighters. It was the first single from the group's 2007 album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

The music video ‘The Pretender’ by Foo Fighters shows several features of Andrew Goodwin’s music video theory. The video commences with an aircraft hanger this could be recognised to represent the scale of the band as they are very well received in the music industry.

There are several close ups of the band are used throughout; this is heavily enforced by the record label. It creates a personality for the band and helps them make solid motives that set them apart from other bands in the same genre as them. Low angel shots of Dave Ghrol (Lead singer) and his guitar at the beginning make him look tall and powerful signifying he is the most important member of the band.

Near the end of the video the wall of red behind them explodes and showers the room in a red paint. The red paint could be visually perceived to represent the emotion and anger being the musical composition, but additionally the climax of the video. Visual editing can be visually shown to match that of the tempo close ups of the instruments being played in sync with the music shows the audience that the band can play. This can also be applied to the lip-syncing

Although the video consist of mainly performance, linking together lyrics and visuals creates an idea of a narrative. “I’m what’s right, I’m the enemy” is showing they're going against society and the police in particular. This comes towards to the end of the video showing that whats holding them together has eventually snapped and that he has given up being in ill-mannered towards the police and has deiced to make a stand.

The performers have a wide stance while playing; this is commonly associated with rock music and is often shown in rock videos.  Additionally a tedious feature of music is the appearance of the band, they look messy/scruffy and wear their instruments low on the body this additionally promotes the wide stance they have. A widespread representation in music is a massive hefty reliance on a narrative; rock videos incline to have less of a narrative and more performance in their music videos.

Song Choice Survey

This is the song choice survey that we decided to go out and take. We went and ask several different people around school to get their opinion on what song we should choose.

Choosing Genre

Here are my brainstorms on figuring out what our genre should be for our music video. Firstly we started with a normal brainstorm and listed out several different genres that we were interested in. We then thought of all the sub genres that can be inputted with our one. After we had narrowed what genre we were picking, we made another brainstorm, this time comparing: Alternative rock and Indie rock. We began to name bands and research which ones fit in with which genre. This would later on help us decide a song for our music video. After naming bands we halved the brainstorm and started listing characteristics that the genres might have. In the end we decided on choosing Alternative rock with Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Fallout boy and 30  seconds to mars as our influences.

Digipak plan

This is my digipak plan, there are seven sections to a digipak, the front cover, the back, the inside, the first disc, the bonus disc and a booklet. Here on my digipak, for the front cover I have decided to make it a puddle which shows a reflection of a guitar within it. The back of the digipak will have a picture of the band all holding their instruments with the track list going down the side. The booklet will be similar to the back with a picture of the band however this time they will be in a different location. My main disc and bonus disc will have dark blue ripples of water. The text will not be in the ripples on the first disk but will be for the bonus one. The back will feature a building which will show part of the location that we are in. There is also the spine which will have the name of the band on it and would usually have an album name.

Band Name Survey

Here is a survey for our band deciding on a name. We asked several people in our school to pick a name that they liked out of a list of names that we thought up early but couldn't decide on which ones to keep. The majority went for Cold Liberty, which we then all agreed is a good name for a band and that we will be using it.

The Culture Industry Notes

Adorno and Horkheimer - They said that the culture industry showed off an "assembly line character" which could be seen in the fake method of turning out its products. They took the term "Culture Industry" to argue that the way products are produced is similar to the way other companies manufactures a large number of goods. Culture production became a routine, standardised repetitive operation that produced undemanding cultural commodities which in turn resulted in a type of consumption that was standardised, distracted and passive.

According to highbrow people, everything lowbrow is bad examples of low brow shows are: The X Factor, Soaps, Reality shows etc... this is because they are standardised. People of highbrow complain that everything is the same and nothing is unique.

X Factor is corrupting the music industry, due to the homogeneity. Capitalist corporations are all powerful and control everything.

Pseudo Individuality says that there are superficial differences, everything looks the same but they have a minor difference. Two examples of this are: The X Factor and The Voice. They both have the same premise but there is a small difference in the way the judges get to listen to the music. If there is anything that's different it will usually get changed so that it can fit the "norm" and get standardised.

Jay Z Analysis

Jay Z is seen as being a gangster in this music video. This can be seen by the use of urban setting where they use: freestyle dancing, guns, graffiti, criminality, rough looking clubs, him getting shot, basketball court, the police are white and black men are in prison.

The cinematography used is in the video are close-ups which are to show the record label, there are low angles when the camera are on Jay Z to show that we are inferior to him. There are other close-ups when he swears, shows that his record label is explicit, it also shows his aggression and his type of genre. The only other shot types that there are, are long shots of unimportant people, and the only close-ups that aren't on Jay Z are on the female "breasts and ass".

The target audience for this type of video is young adults which are addressed by any relevance to how they act compared to how people in the music video act.

His own record label is Def Jam, this shows his independence. There is less emphasis on Jay Z on his own as he is an established artist and doesn't need a lot of focus.

Goodwin
There is reference and notion of looking in the video, this is shown by when you see his face is on another TV within the video. The lyrics match the video when he talks about his hat he then proceeds to move it. He also says the word "bitch" and it literally shows a woman. There is a synchronous relationship, when he raps fast the video goes fast and it cut's in time with the beat. The use of fast editing shows that it's an aggressive music video.

Music Record Labels

Difference between major and independent labels.

Major label - A major label is owned by an enormous corporation. Majors have tons of money to throw into promotion and tour support advertising. Major labels are more strict about what they let their artist release as they don't want to pay for something that's going to fail.

Independent label- Independent labels are low key and they will sign an artist whether they think sound good and have a future in music. If you are signed into an independent label you will have to pay for the equipment that they will need to create the music.

The Big 3

Sony BMG - Sony BMG was a founded March 3rd 2004 and holds a share of 25% of the music market. They have offices in more than 30 countries around the world. They and own and distribute more than 20 labels, some which are big in the business, such as: SoSo Def, Red Music Distribution and J records. They also have some of the top selling artists such as: Britney spears, Justin Timberlake, Leona Lewis, etc...

Warner Music Group - Warner Brothers movie studio began the label in 1958 as a way to release the soundtracks from their films. The time they created the label was good due to the increase in popularity of rock and pop music. 1968 they acquired Atlantic Records, which at the time was well know for it's jazz and R&B.  They expanded again, by buying Elektra Records and changed their names to Warner Communications but was better known as Warner Elektra Atlantic (WEA). In1987 they merged with Time corporation forming Time Warner. They sold Warner Music in 2003 for $2.3 billion.

The Universal Music Group - The Universal Music Group is an American multinational company - a subsidiary of Universal Studios. In the early days, Universal Records was seen as an unimportant extension of the Universal Pictures Group who were the most successful movie studios in Hollywood. Some artists signed with Universal or with their subsidiaries include Kayne West, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani.

Fanfare records - Fanfare records was a British record label that was founded by Iain Burton and Simon Cowell which was used to make Simon break into the music business. Burton and Cowell worked together at Fanfare Records for eight years. The label was most successful during the mid 1980s to early 1990s. The label became known and successful when they came with Sinitta.

Postmodernsism is a shortcut to mass audiences

Postmodernism is a shortcut to mass audiences because it allows more people to get into something again, if something is remade the people who previously liked it will, and then you will have the newer audiences who haven't seen it before or didn't want to because of how old or different it was, but will now watch it due to it being modernised.

An example of postmodernism can be a parody an example of an artist who creates parody music videos is: Weird Al, an example of a music video he has made is Fat which is a parody of Bad by Michael Jackson:

and

You can see the resemblance by the beginning of the song and how it is acted out. The setting that they are both in is some form of car park. He sings with the same beat and tune to the Bad song, it is almost the same song.

John Fiske develops Roland Barthes' semic code: A car chase representation is relatable to to us due to all the ones we have seen in tv shows and movies. It is rare that we are going to experience one in real life and if we were to ever get into a car chase we would try to follow the model from the media we were given. We would understand intertexually, in terms of have seen so often on our screens. This has created the cultural knowledge of the concept of a 'car chase' and it has left people knowing it as a normal event.

Postmodernism Notes

Postmodernism - Characterized by the self conscious use of the earlier styles and conventions, it's a mixing of different artistic style and media.

Experimental - Stage of genre attempts to establish trends.

Cannon- Stage works within those trends to dix them into our cultural understandings.

Post modern- Looks at trends

Post modern- Becomes new by referring to the old, invents by copying, humorous or terrifying and anyone can make it.

Homage - Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Pastiche- Using the imagery of the one text to make comments about another.

Parody- Taking the mickey.

Examples of homage is "Smooth Criminal" and "Naughty Girl" following the film "Band Wagon".

An example of pastiche is Will Young's "Switch it on" which is a copy of Tony Scott's "Top Gun".

An example of a parody is "Predator the musical" where someone has made a song out of the lines in the predator movie.

Goodwin's Theory Notes

Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals and a link with music and visuals. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups on the artist.  Frequently reference to notion of looking is often an intertexual reference. There are frequent references to the notion of looking and the voyeuristic treatment of the female body. The voyeuristic treatment is usually used to get more people to watch their music videos as companies know sex sells, therefore selling out a body will help people with gaining a lot of publicity and attention towards their music video. For example: "Blurred Lines" featured naked women and got a lot of attention due to that.

Technical Codes

Technical codes - Cinematography

As with any moving image text, how the camera is used and how images are sequenced will have a significant impact upon moving.

Camera movement, angle and shot distance all need to be analysed.

Camera movement accompanies movement of performers but also creates a more dynamic feel to stage performance. They did this by constantly circling the band as they form a song.

Close-up does predominate, as in most TV, partly because of the screen size and partly because of the desire to create a sense of intimacy for the viewer. Also emphasises half of the commodity on sale.

Technical codes - Editing

Most common form of editing is fast cut montage, rendering many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewing, there are videos that use slow pace and gentler transitions to establish mood.

This is particularly apparent for the work of many female solo artists with a broad audience appeal, such as Dido.

Often enhancing the editing is digital effects which play the original images to offer different kinds of pleasure for the audience. E.G. Split screens, colourisation and blockbuster film CGI.

Development of technical codes

They key innovation in the development of the modern music was: video recording and editing processes along with effect - Chroma Key or Green/Blue screen.

The advent of high-quality colour videotape recorders and portable video cameras enabled pop acts to produce videos easier.

In the 1990s, a number of technical codes became common.

Most common form of editing associated with the music promo is fast cut montage. Many images impossible to grasp on first viewing thus ensuring multiple viewings.

Split screens and other common effects.

Non- representation techniques, in which the musical artists are never shown have become more common.

Lack of edits, long takes/steadicam also common experimentation.

As genre developed music video directors turned into 35mm film.

By mid-1950s releasing a music video to accompany a new single became a new standard.

History of Music Video Notes

Music video

The invention of film/cinema brought the possibility of combining music and moving images. The advanced in technology helped with this process as it allowed more possibilities.
